PipeLeak Fix

Burst Pipe? What to Do in the First 15 Minutes

When a pipe bursts, panic is the natural reaction, and it is also the thing that costs the most. A pressurised supply pipe can discharge a large volume of water every minute, so the first few minutes decide whether you are dealing with a wet floor or a ruined ceiling. Keep this plan somewhere easy to find, and share it with everyone in your household.

Minute 1 to 3: stop the water

Go straight to the main shut-off valve and turn it clockwise until it stops. In most homes it sits where the supply enters the property, near the water meter, under the kitchen sink or close to the overhead tank outlet. If the leak is on a single fixture, the small isolation valve on that fixture’s supply line may be enough. If you do not know where your main valve is, find it today, before you ever need it.

Minute 3 to 5: make the area safe

Water and electricity are a dangerous combination. If water is near sockets, appliances, light fittings or the distribution board, switch off the power to that area at the breaker, but only if you can reach the board while standing somewhere dry. If you cannot do that safely, keep everyone out of the room and wait for help.

Minute 5 to 10: limit the spread

  • Open the lowest cold tap in the property to drain the remaining water out of the pipes.
  • If the water heater is affected, switch it off before draining hot lines.
  • Move furniture, rugs, documents and electronics away from the water.
  • Use towels, buckets and a mop to stop water reaching other rooms or running through the floor.
  • If a ceiling is bulging with water, keep clear of it and place a bucket underneath. Do not push on it.

Minute 10 to 15: record and call

Take clear photos and short videos of the leak, the damaged areas and any affected belongings. These records help with insurance claims and help the technician understand what happened. Then call an emergency leak repair service and describe what you see: where the water is coming from, whether you managed to shut it off, and whether any electrics are affected.

What happens when the technician arrives

A professional repair starts by confirming the supply is safely isolated and locating the exact failure. Depending on the pipe material and the cause, the fix may be a clamp or coupling, a section replacement or a new run of pipe. Once the repair is complete, the line is pressure tested before the water is restored, so you know the job will hold. Any underlying cause, such as excessive pressure or corrosion, should be explained so the same thing does not happen again.

After the leak: drying out properly

Surfaces can look dry within a day while moisture remains trapped inside walls, under tiles or in floor screed. Ventilate the area, keep air moving and ask for moisture readings before repainting or replacing flooring. Sealing in damp is one of the most common causes of mould and repeat damage.
